As her balance and control with stepping under the overhead ladder is improving, and her sense of balance is increasing as a result of the corner standing, the next challenge for our young walker-to-be is to learn how to step with reduced support whilst still keeping her body straight and under control.
The overhead support can be reduced by introducing a dynamic concept to the support provided. Instead of holding on to a stable overhead rung, the child walks under the ladder using ropes for support. As she reaches for the rope and grabs on, she has to cope with the movement of the rope, thereby learning one of the essential skills required for independent walking - the ability to go off balance and regain control without falling over.
