Joshua

Joshua was born a healthy 9lb bouncing boy at home in 2001. He was warmly welcomed as the eighth child in the family. Three days later Joshua was admitted to hospital after suffering a cerebral haemorrhage. The haemorrhaging discontinued after a Vitamin K injection, but the prognosis was that his chances of survival were very slight and if he did survive he would be severely handicapped. He was later diagnosed with Focal Epilepsy and after continuous seizures over a period of many weeks, Joshua was flown to Brisbane were his condition finally stabilised.

In August 2001, at seven months old, Joshua commenced a Neuro-developmental Therapy Program. Up until this time, Joshua’s progress had been very slow, and the initial predictions about his future seemed to be coming true. When he was first assessed at seven months, Joshua was unable to use his arms, he could not sit or roll, his reaction to external stimuli was limited and his eyes could not focus correctly. He had limited awareness of what was going on around him, and made very few sounds.

Joshua has been doing the therapy program for two and a halfjoshua03 years, and he has made remarkable progress in this time. He has learnt to sit, crawl and now can walk normally. Joshua now can even run! He is vocalising a lot and takes a keen interest in everything that goes on around him. He understands everything that is said to him, is able to socialise with other children, and is well on his way to being a “normal” little boy.

Statement from Vicki (Joshua’s mother):

“I highjoshua202ly recommend any program that parents and family can get involved in when a brain injury has occurred. It is satisfying and challenging to be able to be proactive in understanding and being able to do hands on therapy for your child. The Neuro-Developmental Therapy Program is a must for families that have a child with any developmental issues/problems to give their child the upmost opportunity to meet his/her potential.
