Cruising

Cruising around furniture and walls provides further opportunity to learn about independent stepping in a safe environment. As the child steps sideways she is learning about transferring weight from one foot to the other, at the same time developing the balance skills required to achieve this.

To encourage a child to cruise along a wall, an cruising fence can be set up. The fence gives more support than the wall as it gives the child something to hold onto, but it requires a more upright stance than cruising around furniture.

Once the child mastered the fence cruising, she should be ready to continue cruising along a wall. In fact, this often happens naturally - the child gets to the end of the fence and discovers that she can keep moving along the flat wall
