Balance

As the child becomes proficient at walking under the overhead ladder, she also needs to learn about the balance and control required to achieve independent standing.

A padded corner is a good place to try and teach this. When positioned in the corner, the child is able to use the walls of the corner for support, whilst still doing most of the work required to maintain an upright position.

As she becomes stronger and more confident, the child can be encouraged to push away from the corner a little so that she can begin to experience what is involved with independent standing. The corner is a safe environment in which to practice this skill, and the child can gain confidence without the risk of hurting herself.
